Government urged to meet child poverty targets for families with disabled children
A report by Contact a Family, the Child Poverty Action Group and One Parent Families published last Friday (1 December) shows that almost half of all parents with disabled children are missing out on key benefits because they lack information on their entitlements. The report, Out of Reach, which is also supported by the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign and End Child Poverty, highlights that the government risks missing its target of halving child poverty by 2010 unless it does more to make sure families with disabled children get the benefits they need.
Steve Broach, Every Disabled Child Matters campaign manager, comments:
'We know that over half of all families with disabled children live in or on the margins of poverty. Benefits such as Disability Living Allowance are vital if families are going to keep up with the additional costs of caring for a disabled child. We welcome this research by Contact a Family, CPAG and One Parent Families - by working together, we can keep up the pressure on government to lift families with disabled children out of poverty'.
