EDCM calls for joint delivery between disabled children and palliative care reviews
17 May 2007
A review of care for children with life-limiting conditions launched today (17 May) calls for more resources to support children and their families. The review highlights the fact that 'there is an enormous overlap between children with disabilities and complex health needs and those requiring palliative care.'
EDCM welcomes the announcement from Health Minister Ivan Lewis that there will be a new national strategy for children's palliative care.
Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children, comments: 'We are delighted that the Palliative Care Review recognises that disabled children form a large part of the group of children receiving palliative care services. We look forward to seeing joint working between government departments to fund - and deliver - the right support for these children and their families.'
The publication of the Palliative Care Review builds upon the current high political profile of the needs of disabled children and their families, which were highlighted in the Prime Ministers resignation speech. The government review of services for disabled children and their families, due to launch on Monday 21 May, is expected to deliver significant new resources to provide essential support for families with disabled children.
