4 billion must deliver for disabled children

EDCM has welcomed the government's commitment of £4 billion for Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare, urging government to make sure that this money makes a real difference to families with disabled children.

Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children and Board Member for EDCM, comments:
'We welcome today's funding injection to deliver the government's Sure Start commitments. We particularly welcome the focus on the need for the money to work hardest for disadvantaged groups. This funding needs to build on the £35 million allocated specifically to childcare for disabled children through the Aiming High review, to make a reality of the powerful new sufficiency duties in the 2006 Childcare Act.

Parents with disabled children need a range of accessible childcare options, and this calls for a joined-up approach between children's centres and other childcare providers such as childminders. This is the way to make sure that children with complex needs and challenging behaviour get the same level of care as other children.'
