EDCM highlights need for menu of services
Individual Budgets for disabled children and their families are to be piloted in a small-scale study across England from January.
Following the publication of Aiming High for Disabled Children in May last year, the Department for Children, Schools and Families commissioned a scoping study to look at the best way to proceed with a pilot scheme extending Individual Budgets to families of disabled children. To date, Individual Budgets have been piloted for disabled adults only.
AHDC made a commitment to pilot Individual Budgets for disabled children and young people, to increase the flexibility and choice in the provision of services. AHDC also recommended the inclusion of as many funding streams as possible at a local level, with a particular emphasis on health funding streams.
Christine Lenehan, EDCM Board member and Director of the Council for Disabled Children, said:
'EDCM welcomes these pilots, which could offer a real element of choice and control for some young people and families. However we are concerned about the practical and technical implications of the pilots, including which budget streams can and will be included. We also want to see individual budgets as part of a menu of services and support available to disabled children, young people and their families.'
