EDCM welcomes the publication of the new ten-year youth strategy, Aiming High for Young People published yesterday (26th July).
The strategy forms part of the 'Aiming High' review between HM Treasury and the Department for Children, Schools and Families which also includes Aiming High for Disabled Children.
Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children and EDCM Board Member, comments on the youth strategy:
'EDCM welcomes the commitment in the review to increase participation by disabled young people in positive activities. We want to see government following this through - for instance, by making sure disabled young people are fully involved in the new schemes to allow young people to decide how the money for positive activities is spent.
The delivery programme for the review also needs to take account of the particular barriers to accessing youth services faced by disabled young people, and the need for disabled young people to have access to informal play and leisure opportunities that are not structured by adults.
We hope to see evidence that the policy leads for the youth strategy and the disabled children's review are working closely together, particularly on key crossover areas like the Transition Support Programme'.
