MPs demand improvements to disabled children's services

26 October 2006

Report from Parliamentary Hearings on services for disabled children launched

The report of the parliamentary hearings on services for disabled children will be launched today (Thursday 26 October) at a reception in the House of Commons. Ed Balls MP, Economic Secretary, will receive the report from Rt Hon Tom Clarke MP, Chair of the hearings, on behalf of the hearings panel. You can download the full report and a summary report at the bottom of this page.

The report highlights the gap between government policy and the reality for families on the ground, calling for additional resources, improved targets and inspection frameworks and new entitlements to support for families.

Every Disabled Child Matters campaign manager Steve Broach comments:

'The publication of this report is a watershed moment in the campaign to get rights and justice for every disabled child. MPs have found systemic problems with the way support is provided to families with disabled children. There is an overwhelming consensus that the system needs additional resources to function properly. The consequence of this under-investment is poverty, isolation and social exclusion for children and families.

We commend the MPs, led by Tom Clarke and Joan Humble, for their thorough investigation of the realities of life for families with disabled children. Given the sustained commitment shown to this issue by Economic Secretary Ed Balls MP, we are confident that the government will respond positively to their report through the Comprehensive Spending Review'
