EDCM welcomes cross party support for proposals to improve housing
MPs of all parties joined in a debate yesterday (22 July 2008) about the current crisis in housing for disabled children and their families.
The debate follows the publication of EDCM’s report, Disabled children and housing, which highlights that less than half of disabled children live in housing suitable to their needs.
Sally Keeble MP (Lab, Northampton North) who led the debate said:
‘Families with disabled children should not have to choose between space for the disability or family life; they must be able to have both.’
Iain Wright MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, responded for the Government. He agreed to look at how to best provide guidance to local authorities on the specific housing requirements of families with disabled children. He also confirmed that if a child’s needs change, they can reapply for an additional amount of up to £30,000 under the Disabled Facilities Grant.
Mr Wright commented that government policy should be ‘moving forward to ensure that we have the accommodation that this whole country needs, particularly…with regard to the needs, wishes and aspirations of families with disabled children.’
