New Short Breaks guidance: listen to families!

23 July 2008

EDCM welcomes guidance urging local authorities and PCTs to work with families to improve services

New short breaks implementation guidance was issued last week by the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) and Department of Health. The guidance emphasises the need for local authorities and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to work with disabled young people and their families to plan the transformation of their short break services over the next three years.

The short breaks transformation programme, part of Aiming High for Disabled Children is supported by a funding package of £370 million from the DCSF, and 'matched' funding from the Department of Health.

The guidance confirms that further details of the level of funding available to PCTs will be published later this year by stating:
'We will confirm the overall level of funding we are making available to PCTs to support improvements in services for disabled children and this will be set out as part of the Child Health Strategy that the Government will publish in September 2008.'
