Every Disabled Child Matters welcomes new research published today confirming a two-way relationship between disability and child poverty.

The research, undertaken by the Institute for Public Policy Research and commissioned by the Disability Rights Commission, confirms that families with disabled children are more likely to live in poverty than other families.

The report recommends that all disabled children should be eligible for Disability Living Allowance to cover the additional costs of bringing up a disabled child.

Steve Broach, Campaign Manager for Every Disabled Child Matters, comments:
'This report is welcome because it confirms what families tell us - that the cost of bringing up a disabled child is driving many of these families into poverty. The child poverty strategy due out shortly must fully recognise the particular needs of families with disabled children, if the government is to have any hope of meeting its own child poverty target'.

The report is available from http://www.ippr.org.uk/pressreleases/?id=2615
